For the last several years Evelyn has been researching the life and works
of Agnes Klavora (also known as Ines Strauss Klavora) from Austria. Agnes
was a notable women both for her fine needle-work, lacemaking skills and
her personal life.
Agnes made her trip across the ocean in 1906, at the age of 40 as a single
women after the death of her husband. Her death notice states that she was
a linguist that knew several languages and that she was the 2nd foreign woman
to become an American citizen in the state of Vermont. Agnes established
herself as a lace teacher in Barre where she taught many women the intricacies
of Austrian Cluny lacemaking.
Agnes' legacy as a designer, teacher and lacemaker lives on through her 150+
prickings (patterns), pillows, bobbins and lace samples that were miraculously
been discovered and have since been preserved. Evelyn has been analyzing
the remaining lace samples and comparing them to Agnes' prickings. A publication
of the prickings is planned for a future date.
